HR Upgrades is a technological spin-off aimed at helping companies enhance their HR management capabilities through innovative products, based on the latest technology and research.
Our vision of future HR operations needing to be powerful, well-staffed and armed with the latest knowledge and technology, came about when a small group of people from different walks of life – from psychologists and teachers, to business and management engineers started to gravitate around a common belief: during the next decade Human Resources management will become the most important in-company discipline of all.
This prediction is based on the observable trajectory of two well defined macro-trends: the rise of corporate power and the movement toward a human-capital-centric economy.
There is little doubt that the power wielded by corporations has grown enormously; take a look at the wealthiest 100 organizations on the planet and you are as likely to see a company listed there as a country. As corporations progressively control an ever larger share of global resources, they will be increasingly under pressure to demonstrate their legitimacy to employees as well as to the wider public. We need to see increasing corporate engagement with environmental, social, and humanitarian issues.
The second macro trend is the ever expanding ‘gig’ economy and the changes technology are bringing to our ways of working. We are rapidly moving toward the age of human capital, a new age where individual creativity, innovative capacity, and entrepreneurship are becoming the defining element of competitiveness and value generation for a significant section of workers.
We believe that HR departments will soon find themselves right at the intersection of these two very different, almost antagonistic, macro trends.
The way the inconsistencies of these two different forces are resolved and integrated will in no small part determine how people live and work together now and in the future.

Hello, I am Alessandro Pala, Business Development Director and co-founder of HR Upgrades. I am also the owner of HR Jobs and Ideas a LI network of more than 200,000 HR professionals. Having trained in Genetics and Molecular Biology at the University of Edinburgh, and later at UCL in London, I have keen interest for research, technology and innovation. At the same time 20 years of business management experience around the world has taught me that out in the real world it’s often people and their personal qualities which make all the difference. Setting up HR Upgrades offers me the possibility to bring together my belief in personal development with my passion for business and innovation.

Hi, I’m Ally Micklem – the Head of Research and Communication at HR Upgrades, and Group Manager of HR Jobs and Ideas. I have a background in local press, an MPhil in European Journalism from the Cardiff University, and am now really enjoying getting involved in researching, writing and editing our communications materials. I have been a language teacher for more than ten years, so have particularly enjoyed getting involved in the development of the new E-learning business simulation game, SolarHR (V3 out soon!) I still teach, and am an MBPsS at the British Psychological Society, Education section, and a Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts.
